Sperm count refers to the average number of sperm present in one sample of semen. Sperm quality is one of the prime factors that affect fertility. There are many ways to increase sperm count. Based on the most recent World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, experts consider a healthful sperm count to be 15 million per milliliter (ml), or at least 39 million per ejaculate.

A healthy sperm count is necessary for fertility. A low sperm count is considered to be anything between 10 and 20 million sperm per milliliter. Twenty million sperm per milliliter may be adequate for pregnancy if the sperm are healthy.

If you’ve been trying to have a baby and it’s just not happening then you might have a low sperm count. It’s actually one of the most common causes of male infertility. While infertility is not always treatable, there are some things you can do to boost your chances of conceiving. Fertility can sometimes be improved with a healthy diet, supplements, and other lifestyle strategies.

What causes low sperm count

1.    Exercise

Staying active and leading a healthy lifestyle can help to increase your sperm count. Exercising regularly can boost testosterone levels and improve fertility. Studies show that men who exercise regularly have higher testosterone levels and better semen quality than inactive men.

2.    Lose weight if you are overweight

Losing weight if you’re overweight is one of the single-most effective things you can do to increase sperm count. Studies have shown that weight loss can significantly increase semen volume, concentration, and mobility, as well as the overall health of sperm.

3.    Eat well

Like any other organ in the human body, the reproductive system relies on the nutrients and vitamins supplied to it. Foods can influence the reproductive health of a person positively. It can increase the production of testosterone, thereby increasing sperm count as well as sperm motility and quality. Some of the foods that can help in increasing sperm count are:

7.    Quit smoking

The researchers found that people who smoked moderate or heavy amounts of tobacco had a lower sperm quality than people who smoked tobacco less heavily.

8.    Avoid alcohol and drug use

Consumption of drugs such as marijuana and cocaine is directly related to decreased sperm count. Even excessive alcohol lowers the testosterone levels and sperm quality and quantity in men. It can even cause low libido and even impotency.

9.    Reduce stress

Stress causes your body to take defensive action and conserve energy. Because of that the body becomes less concerned with reproduction and focuses more on surviving, in times of distress. Have a healthy diet, exercise regularly and do something that you enjoy doing. All of this will help in managing stress.

10.    Avoid some prescription medications

Some prescription medications can potentially decrease healthy sperm production. Once the male stops taking the medication, however, their sperm count should return to normal or increase.

Medications that may temporarily reduce the production and development of sperm include:

  • Some antibiotics
  • anti-androgens
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antipsychotics
  • opiates
  • Antidepressants
  • anabolic steroids, which may continue to affect sperm count for up to 1 year after stopping the medication
  • exogenous or supplementary testosterone
  • methadone

11.    Take vitamin D

Lower levels of Vitamin D have been directly linked with low sperm count. Taking Vitamin D and calcium supplements have shown to improve the sperm count. You can ask your doctor and buy these from anywhere without even prescription.

When you have irregular period and trying to get pregnant so many doubts comes in mind. I can relate very well with that. I always had irregular period. After marriage my lifestyle changed and my period became unpredictable. Because of this I always had long cycle like more than 35 days. When we were planning for a baby many thoughts were coming into my mind like:

  • Can I get pregnant?
  • How will I calculate my ovulation date?
  • Am I fertile enough?
  • Should I be concerned about this?
  • When to take a pregnancy test?
  • Should I go to doctor before even trying for a year because usually it is said that on an average it can take a year to get pregnant.

and many other questions.

Don’t worry about that. Here I will try to answer each of the questions that can come in mind while trying for baby and if u have irregular period.

But before that

Let me tell me what irregular periods are in short:

A period is considered irregular if the gap between starting of your periods keeps changing. Your cycle is counted from the first day of your last period to the start of your next period. Mostly, each period last between four to seven days in women.

Your period is considered irregular if

  • If your cycle is of less than 21 days or more than 35 days.
  • Period last more than seven days
  • You missed three or more period in a row
  • The length of your cycle keeps changing since more than 6 months

You are getting less than 8 cycles in a year.

Can you get pregnant with irregular period?

The answer is simply yes, of course. Irregular periods don’t always mean infertility. It can be little harder to get pregnant but doesn’t mean infertility. Many women get pregnant with irregular period including me, and have normal pregnancy. Now I am also a mother of 3 year old.

Having irregular period doesn’t mean you are not ovulating. The only concern is that your ovulation is unpredictable and you can’t predict correctly when are you ovulating and when not.

All women, especially women with irregular periods, can ovulate at different points from cycle to cycle. That makes it impossible for a woman to know when she is most fertile. Irregular periods also can make it hard for a girl to know if she is pregnant, since she doesn’t know when to expect her period. So if you have irregular period and trying to get pregnant, this doesn’t mean you cannot get pregnant.

How can u track ovulation days with irregular period?

Another question that comes in mind while trying for a baby is how I can calculate ovulation with irregular period when trying to get pregnant. A girl having regular cycle ovulates 14 days before the date of next cycle. Like a girl with 28 days cycle ovulate on 14th day and girl with 35 day cycle ovulate on 21st day. But with irregular period cycle is unpredictable. But there are many other ways to calculate ovulation that I have mentioned below:

getting pregnant with irregular period

1.    Calendar  method:

Even though your periods are irregular it’s always good to maintain a calendar and keep tracking your cycle. This will give you an average idea of your cycle and there will be times when similar patterns are encountered, during the course of monthly cycles. And this data is also very important for your doctor if you further receive any treatment.

2.    Cervical mucus changes

This is another way to calculate ovulation. Your cervical mucus changes when you ovulate. Cervical mucus during the first few days after your menstrual cycle will be dry. Your cervical mucus will begin to increase.  During ovulation, the cervical mucus will be, slippery, clear, and stretchy like egg white consistency.

3.    Basal body temperature

Another method is to keep tracking your basal body temperature. Your body temperature fluctuates with the onset of ovulation. If you are tracking your basal body temperature, you will find a spike in temperature as ovulation occurs.  This lets you know that ovulation is occurring.

3.    Ovulation predication kits

Now a day’s many ovulation predictor kits and fertility monitors are available in the market. The concept behind using these predictor kits is to measure the Luteinizing Hormone or LH which is typically present in urine, one or two days prior to the ovulation timeline. The kits detect a substantial spike in LH levels and identify that ovulation is around the corner.

However, calculating exact ovulation date with irregular period is quite challenging. But all the methods above can make the task bit easier.

Are irregular periods means infertility?

As I already mentioned above that a woman can get pregnant with irregular period but it can take bit longer than a woman with regular cycle.

Irregular period is a sign of infertility but it doesn’t mean that every woman with irregular period is infertile. Yes, there are exceptions in every situation. I am also having irregular period but I am not infertile, now I have a very naughty 3 year old boy.

If you have sex without using contraception, you can get pregnant at any time during your menstrual cycle, even during or just after your period.

A Woman can get pregnant with an irregular periods. However, the ability to get pregnant decreases significantly. The disadvantage is ovulation becomes difficult to determine. The pregnancy success rate of a healthy woman with a regular cycle is 30%.  This decreases exponentially if periods are unpredictable.

One of the main causes of an irregular period is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is an imbalance in the hormones controlling the reproductive system. PCOS causes irregular ovulation, cysts on ovaries, bleeding, and infertility. Research shows PCOS cases double miscarriages and premature deliveries. There are many other causes of irregular period apart from PCOD.

Having an irregular cycle, including missing periods, can contribute to infertility. It means a woman may not be regularly ovulating. So it is always advisable to check with your doctor if you have irregular period and facing any difficulties in conceiving since more than one or two year.

Should you worry about irregular period and trying to get pregnant with this?

Irregular periods are not always a sign of problem but its best to check with your doctor to ensure about your health.

Irregular periods are concerning. If you are concern about getting pregnant than seeking advice from your OB/GYN doctors can help increase the chances of a successful pregnancy. Missing periods can also be a sign of an underlying medical issue. There’s no need to panic. Take action early.

Lifestyle is another cause of irregular periods. Excessive exercise and dieting can create irregular periods or stop them entirely. High-performance athletes often suffer from irregular periods. Stress, weight gain, and weight loss have adverse effects on the body including your periods.

When to take a pregnancy test with irregular period?

Another problem with irregular period is you don’t know when your next cycle will start and you don’t know when to take a pregnancy test.

If you have irregular periods, try counting 36 days from the start of your last menstrual cycle or four weeks from the time you had sex. At this point, if you are pregnant, your levels of hCG should be high enough to detect the pregnancy.

If your test says you are not pregnant, but you still think you may be pregnant, wait a few more days and take another pregnancy test or you can go for a blood test as well.

Do irregular periods affect the health of a pregnancy?

They can and cannot. Its highly depend on the cause of your irregular cycle. If the cause is unknown to you and your doctor than you may not have increased risk of pregnancy but it’s always best to discuss with your doctor about the possible complications.

Most common cause of irregular cycle is PCOS and pregnancy with PCOS has higher chances of:

When should you visit to the doctor when trying to conceive with irregular menstrual cycle?

Trying for a baby with irregular period can be stressful but believe me stress can only do bad for you and your health. A woman with regular period can take a whole year to get pregnant but when you have irregular period it can take long time.

You should visit to doctor if:

  • You think you are not ovulating
  • Have very long cycle and trying to conceive since long time like more than a year
  • Experiencing painful period
  • You missed more than 3 period but not pregnant
  • History of miscarriages
  • you think you have fertility issue so it’s always better to rule out the cause of underline problem
  • If you are suffering from PCOD and facing problem in conceiving
  • Your age is more than 35 years.

When you are thinking about getting pregnant with irregular period, it is always advisable to check with your doctor as early as possible to check the cause of irregular cycle. So if there are any fertility related issues you can take action on time and can increase the chances of conceiving.

The primary sign of infertility is not getting pregnant after trying for a certain length of time. A doctor may diagnose infertility if a woman has not become pregnant after 1 year of trying.

If the woman is over the age of 35 years old, she may be infertile if she has not become pregnant after 6 months of trying.

Is this the time when you have decided to have a baby? Then this info is right for you. Before trying to get pregnant, you should pre-plan some things that can affect your overall health. Your health will affect the long term and overall health of your baby.

By following below advice, you can

  • Improve your chances of getting pregnant
  • Improve your fertility
  • You can save yourself from a problematic pregnancy to some sort.
  • Improve overall health of your new member

The most important advice for a woman who wants to get pregnant is to get to know her body, specifically her menstrual cycle, so she can more accurately observe her fertile days and intercourse to get pregnant.

Things to check when trying to get pregnant

Here are my top 15 tips to consider while trying to get pregnant. The sooner you incorporate these changes, better it is.

1.     If you are overweight then work on your body

If you are fit then that’s good but if you are not then you should try to fix it. Pregnancy puts a lot of strain on your body so getting fit before getting pregnancy will help you a lot after conceiving. You should keep your body active, do exercises or yoga. Eat well, sleep well and avoid fried foods.

Research has shown that a woman who is overweight can take twice as long to become pregnant than a woman whose BMI is considered normal. And a woman who is underweight might take four times as long to conceive.

Having too much body fat produces excess estrogen, which can interfere with ovulation. Losing 5 to 10 percent of body weight before a woman starts trying to get pregnant could improve her fertility.  And Women who are too thin might not be getting regular periods or could stop ovulating.

2.     If you smoke then quit as soon as possible

You have heard this many times, “smoking kills you slowly”. Smoking can affect the fertility in both man and women. It can damage the DNA of your baby. Smoking is one of the reasons of complicated pregnancy. If you can’t quit smoking by yourself then you should seek for help.

3. Limit alcohol consumption while trying to get pregnant

As we all know large amount of alcohol is not good. However, doctors are not sure about the effect of small amount of alcohol. There is no such definition of small and large amount. Alcohol can react differently in different bodies. There is not much research on this topic that how it affects, so as of now safest option is to stop that or limit its consumption.

4. Go for a good prenatal vitamin

If you are thinking about getting pregnant in next few months then you should start investing in good multivitamins. Good multivitamins itself are packed with lots of nutrients crucial for healthy pregnancy. Like iron can help in anemia, calcium is good for healthy bones, and getting enough vitamin B before and in early pregnancy helps in reducing the brain and spine defects.

FAQs when trying to get pregnant with irregular period

6.     Make a good sleep routine

Good sleep means healthy mind and healthy body. Try to take 7 to 8 hours sleep daily. Try to take naps whenever possible. As you know after having baby you can have multiple sleepless nights. So, it’s good to make a routine and improve your sleep habits.

7.     Incorporate exercise and do meditation

Being active by doing regular, moderate exercise before and after you conceive will help your fertility as well as benefiting your pregnancy and baby in the long term. Women who are physically active are more likely to have children than who are physically less active.

Do walking as much as possible and also keep in mind that heavy exercises are also not recommended. So be active but be careful also. Getting too much exercise or doing frequent strenuous workouts could interfere with ovulation

Doctors see a lot of menstrual disturbances in women who exercise heavily, and a lot of times these women need to cut back on their workouts if they want to become pregnant.

8.     Have sex every other day during fertile period when trying for pregnancy

Every woman has a fertile window of 6 days, 5 days before ovulation and 1 day after ovulation. During that fertile window every couple should have sex every other day while trying to get pregnant. There are lots of myths that one should have sex daily but research shows, it doesn’t make any difference whether you have sex every day or every other day. Other myth is that sex position matters, but actually it does not.

9.     Keep track of your menstrual cycle and fertile window

The key is to keep track of your cycle each month and check for your fertile window. There are so many ways for doing this. Some woman uses ovulation kits, basal body temperature check, cervical mucus change and so on. You can also maintain your calendar every month. There so many apps are also available but these app are not always accurate, so make sure to not rely only on these apps. By keeping track and having sex in most fertile days will increase your chances of getting pregnant.

As we grow older many things happen in the body. Same happen to women, as they get older their fertility decreases and quality of egg also decreases. With age, there are increase risk of heath related issues also. The decline in the fertility doesn’t mean that one cannot get pregnant, it means it takes longer to get pregnant. In the beginning of 30s, there is slight decline in fertility and a sharper decline after 40s.

healthy eating

Healthy diet is not a diet, it’s a lifestyle that is always suggested to follow. There is no strict diet to follow when trying to get pregnant. Try to eat diet rich of protein, iron, calcium and other vitamin/minerals.

When you are trying for baby, vaginal dryness can be worse because of frequent intercourse. Some people even try to use lubricants, but they can also be harmful for sperm, so be sure to use sperm-friendly lubricants.

I can even relate myself to this. When I was trying to conceive, I was not aware about this and after 6 months of trying I went to my doctor and guess what, it was an infection. My doctor treated me for that infection and the very next month I got pregnant.  small things can make big changes. If you are between age 25 to 45, it is advised to have a vaginal screening test every three years. It is best to get the test before trying to get pregnant.

Research shows that consuming too much caffeine while you are trying to conceive can increase the risk of miscarriage. This rule applies to both man and women. If you’re planning to conceive, you and your partner should consider limiting your caffeine intake to 200mg a day.

It is also important to consider your partner health for healthy pregnancy. If you are having any doubt regarding men health and low sperm count then it is important to check with your doctor and also consider his fertility. He can also take some steps and make changes to his lifestyle for a healthy pregnancy and healthy future of baby.

When to seek medical help

Consider the points below to know when you should visit to your doctor and get an expert opinion.

  1. Check with your doctor if you are trying from more than 12 months and your age is less than 35. But if your age is more than 35 then it is advised to wait only for 6 months.
